the kizikula story · envisioned in 1999

a place
to come back to.

two childhood friends. a shared dream of Zanzibar. a place that became a home for others, too.

growing up in Dubai, the two friends imagined a future in Zanzibar. one had roots here; both wanted a place to return to. when land became available on the coast of Kizimkazi, they took the opportunity.

the idea was personal: small guest houses for friends and family, with space to welcome travellers when they were away. that spirit still shapes kizikula, a communal home with room to find your own quiet corner.

architecture & individuality

shaped by place.
made personal.

the architecture is by Case Design. around it, gardens, shaded spaces and views towards the ocean give the days their setting.

each room is designed or inspired by a different muse. that personal starting point makes exploring the rooms part of getting to know kizikula: different perspectives, gathered in one place.

the land & the table

something growing.
something shared.

the landscape has its own collaborators: the Permaculture Design Co, the Practical Permaculture Institute of Zanzibar and designer Andy Hamilton.

food takes its cues from local cultures and produce. the table is another place to come together. it continues the idea that started it all.

a few of our influences

more than
a place to sleep.

music, art, literature and film belong to the story as much as the buildings. the original mix of influences runs from Zanzibar’s architecture and food to Dubai in the nineties, from Alice Coltrane to the dance floor at Plastic People.

there are spaces imagined for movement and stillness, rooftops for the night sky, and a sea-facing pool for the last light of the day.

come with a book, a friend, or no particular plan. make a little room for this place.
